Melchers Singapore Annual Dinner
12 employees and a total of 205 years of Long Service!
On the occasion of the Melchers’ Group Singapore Annual Dinner, 12 employees received their long service awards; 4 of them 25 years and 30 years of service. In his speech, Mr Melchers celebrated this achievement but also recognized that it takes two sides to achieve this. He took the opportunity to talk about the tenacity and resilience of the founders of the Melchers company and their first 150 years in China, and how this mindset has also been one of the virtue of the past and current organisation. He cited examples like the set up of the Rollei factory in Singapore in the 1970s, the build up of the watch business in the 80s or the development of the Singapore Flyer in the early 2000s; and how Melchers has always adapted to the opportunities in ASEAN – while providing good job opportunities to the employees. He also applauded all other employees, whose time with Melchers may not be a round number, but whose contribution is equally important and appreciated; particularly in the current challenging times.
He thanked the Organizing Committee for their hard work to prepare a wonderful evening for all members of the Group. Our entertainer of the night, the one and only Hossan® Leong made the evening double special. He also welcomed Don Tan DT and the Valves & Piping Asia PL (VPA) – Member of C. Melchers team.
Up and up we go, Team Melchers Singapore and Malaysia.

Hungry Ghost Festival
Are we a German company or an Asian company? In fact, we operate in both multi-cultural and -ethnic regions, and wherever we are, we follow and in fact deeply connect with the local traditions of our employees: You can here see our MD Singapore/Malaysia Alexander Melchers BBM burning ‘money’ in Singapore!
The tradition of burning money during the 7th lunar month (typically in August to September) in South East Asia and China is part of the Hungry Ghost Festival, a deeply rooted cultural and religious observance among Taoist and Buddhist communities. And recently our Management in Singapore!
During this festival, the gates of hell open, allowing the spirits of the ancestors to roam the earth. By burning “hell money” (joss paper) and elaborate replicas of coins, gold bars, even cars, we honour ancestors, appease wandering spirits, and seek protection from misfortune. And we pray for more sales, for better profits and higher bonus of course! 😃
Actually, the practice is more cultural than religious—originating from ancient Chinese customs rather than core Taoist or Buddhist teachings. Typically, also Food offerings (e.g., fruits, cakes, baos) are placed at altars or sidewalks for the spirits.
